The latest research suggests that Chronic Pain is the result of a malfunction in the nervous system. When you get injured, the normal response of the body is for you to feel pain. That response is a type of loop.
However, sometimes when you experience a lot of pain, there is a malfunction in this loop. Cells, that normally don't play a role in the pain response, get activated by the large pain stimulus. When this reaction starts, it creates another loop that is very difficult to stop.
You will notice that in this loop, there is no Tissue Damage. The main distinction between a normal pain response and an abnormal pain response is that the pain is not being generated by an actual injury. It is happening in the spinal cord or nervous system and can't be shut off through the treatments that are usually successful.
Patients with Chronic Pain experience changes in every aspect of life - health, career, family, relationships, social network, mental health, etc. Effective treatment should include a multi-modal approach that considers the Body, Mind, Spirit and Social. Working together with your primary healthcare provider, we try to address all three components.
Body - Physiotherapy, Osteopathic Manual Therapy, and Massage Therapy help to restore motion in stiff/painful joints and muscles, improve circulation and lymphatic drainage and help prevent additional injuries.
Mind - Increased motion and flexibility, increased activity and social engagement resulting from successful treatment of the Body can improve the physical sense of well-being.
Spirit - Improvements in both Body and Mind components along with a positive, therapeutic relationship with your Practitioner can have an influence on the Spirit component. Education is a big part of our treatment approach. An understanding of the Physiology of Chronic Pain helps patients manage expectations, set and achieve realistic goals and experience an overall feeling of success.
At Innova Health Clinic we recognize that treatment has to be holistic but still individualized for each different Body, Mind and Spirit. The hands-on, unhurried approach of manual therapy treatment allows us the opportunity to connect with Patients, get to know them and better understand what kind of change is meaningful for them.
